Glancing down with a rush of fear, Edward realised that he was holding on to the dragon's tail-and that caldor was holding on the monster's back! And those two overhanging rocks were the dragon's mighty wings. He wanted to run, but his legs were frozen with fear.

Tom's heart began thumping again as he remembered how he had freed ferno from the curse of Malvel the dark wizard. The dragon had burnt crops all over Avantia and blocked the river, making the land dry and barren. When Tom had unlocked the magic collar that imprisoned him, the dragon was released from the spell. As he flew away, he had dislodged the stones damming the river, and a foaming torrent had gushed down the hillside.

The drawings had been made with charcoal and seemed to be telling a story. Tom recognised the five jagged montains and simple pictures of men with spears and clubs. In one picture an enormous hand held the mountains in its palm, and men were looking at it in awe.
